Nyack Memorial Park

NYACK - The footbridge linking Memorial Park to the village's marina opened Thursday, just in time for the Fourth of July holiday.

Mayor Don Hammond said Thursday that the $668,000 span, across a shallow inlet between the marina and the reopened riverside park, came in on budget. The wooden bridge will be open daily till dusk, which is when the park closes.

Memorial Park reopened last month, but the road down to the park remains closed. Hammond said some parking spots have been added on Depew and Piermont avenues, but that parkgoers can now use the lot at the Nyack Marina and cross over to Memorial Park via the footbridge.

The waterfront park is open but operating without the amenities that make it one of the village's go-to spots. The bathrooms, basketball court, skate park and the wildly popular splash pad have been shuttered due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Hammond said a village employee is monitoring visitors, gently reminding them to observe social distancing guidelines.

Village Administrator James Politi had said that the village received $195,000 of the footbridge's cost from the New NYBridge Community Benefits Program, which came from that other bridge, the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge in South Nyack.

Hammond said Thursday that the remainder of the bridge's cost was covered by a long-term bond that had been secured for projects that included paving and the footbridge…” More info In Nyack, a footbridge to Memorial Park is Open for business.
